Patient's question:
My newborn baby is around 40 days old. Suddenly, when lying down, she spits up milk directly, spraying it up to 5-8 centimeters high, and the amount is very large. The frequency of spitting up is also high. What could be the reason? What kind of help do I need: Could you please tell me what the cause is and if there are any solutions?
Doctor's answer:
Infants who are breastfed often experience the described spitting up phenomenon when they reach 1 to 2 months of age. This is mostly due to an increase in milk production. In infants with a larger appetite, vomiting may occur, bowel movements may become more frequent, and weight gain is rapid. When this type of vomiting occurs, you can appropriately reduce the amount of milk per feeding while increasing the number of feedings per day (i.e., eat less and feed more often), and the vomiting usually improves.Additionally, feeding an infant while lying down makes spitting up more likely, so it is essential to hold the baby at a slight angle with the head tilted upward while feeding. After feeding, hold the infant upright against an adult's shoulder and gently pat their back. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes before letting the baby lie down again.
