Does thalassemia have several types?

Patient's question:

Who would look at this? My thalassemia gene test results are out. A thalassemia shows no abnormalities. B thalassemia carrier. Is there a problem with my baby?

Doctor's answer:

α-thalassemia is a hemolytic anemia caused by abnormal or deletion of α-globin genes, which inhibits the synthesis of α-globin. If both α-genes on one chromosome 16 are deleted (-), α-chain synthesis is completely inhibited, referred to as α0-thalassemia, also known as α-thalassemia type 1. If only one α-gene is deleted on one chromosome 16 (-α), α-chain synthesis is partially inhibited, referred to as α+ thalassemia, or α-thalassemia type 2. It's possible that this explanation might not be very clear to you, so I suggest you can send your test results to me for a detailed review.
