Features: A History of New Confucianism, a book written in English by Zhang Junmai. In 1952, after Zhang Junmai resided in the United States, he set out to write this book, which took 11 years to complete. In 1957, the first volume of the English edition was published in the U.S., and six years later, the second volume was printed. Key points from the book were translated into Chinese and published in Hong Kong's Life magazine. Starting in August 1980, Cheng Wenxi began translating the entire book into Chinese. Cheng's translation was later proofread by Jiang Rixin and published by the Taipei Hongwen Publishing House in February 1986. The "New Confucianism" in this book refers to the Confucianism that emerged and evolved over approximately a thousand years, from the mid-Tang Dynasty's Han Yu to the late Qing Dynasty's Zeng Guofan, as opposed to the original Confucianism of the pre-Qin period. The author meticulously examines the evolution of this intellectual movement, which was always immersed in the pursuit of the Confucian tradition yet also gave rise to new creative ideas, aiming to provide modern people in cultural crisis with historical insights into the potential revival of Confucianism. This volume is selected from the Chinese edition published by the Taipei Hongwen Publishing House.
Zhang Junmai (1887–1969), also known as Jiashen, Junmai, Shilin, Lizhai, and "Master of the World Room," used the pen name Junfang. He was a native of Baoshan, Jiangsu (now Baoshan District, Shanghai). A modern scholar, Zhang is considered by some as one of the early representatives of New Confucianism. His major works include A Collection of Essays on Chinese, Western, and Indian Philosophy, A History of New Confucianism, Preface to Thought and Society, and Academic Foundations for National Revival.
