Features: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio excels in depicting ghosts and fox spirits, primarily using these tales to expose and critique the corrupt officialdom and feudal scientific and marital systems. However, the content and themes of the entire book are far more extensive, covering human worlds, underworlds, heavens, natural realms, and a wide array of supernatural beings, immortal foxes, birds, flowers, grasshoppers, and various strange creatures. The vast universe holds no shortage of wonders. Therefore, this book is compiled into nine categories: "Immortal Foxes and Ghosts," "True Love and Forced Marriages," "Chivalrous Heroes and Righteous Scholars," "Imperial Examinations and Officialdom," "Injustices and Corruption," "Karma of Good and Evil," "Tricks and Wisdom," "Strange Skills and Abilities," and "Spiritual Birds and Righteous Animals," to help readers grasp the full scope of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. This categorization breaks free from outdated perspectives and the limitations of previous selected editions, incorporating a more contemporary and open-minded approach to reevaluate and select the stories. Among the numerous annotated, translated, and colloquial selected editions published since the founding of the People's Republic of China, this book stands out as truly unique. The text is paired with original Qing Dynasty illustrations, forming a popular illustrated edition that naturally introduces traditional Chinese woodblock art to modern readers' aesthetic perspectives. This creates a distinctive feature that sets this book apart from other colloquial versions of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio.
