Features: Flower-and-bird painting is a very important component of Chinese painting. Since it became an independent category during the mid-Tang Dynasty, it has gradually evolved into the most extensive and technically rich genre in Chinese painting through continuous innovation and refinement by countless painters over the generations. It encompasses flowers, feathers, fish, insects, walking animals, strange rocks, and antiques. The expressive techniques include meticulous brushwork, small freehand sketches, and large freehand sketches, among many others. There are countless styles and schools, each with its own unique characteristics. Generations of painters have created countless exquisite works, leaving behind an invaluable legacy for future generations.
Learning Chinese painting presents two major challenges: finding a good teacher and lacking reference materials. In the past, teachers rarely provided systematic instruction, even to their most trusted disciples. For various reasons, masters were reluctant to reveal their unique skills, and students could only observe their teachers at work or listen to their teachings. Most learning had to be self-directed, making good reference materials all the more crucial.
The primary method for learning Chinese painting is copying, and a single Jieziyuan Huaspu (A Manual of Chinese Painting) has influenced many painters. After mastering the techniques of Chinese painting, observation and sketching from life are also essential. Only by continuously learning from nature can one create excellent works. Therefore, painting theory states: "Learn from contemporary masters while also studying the ancients; learning from the ancients is not as good as learning from nature."
