Chinese Knot Series Folk Masks

Author: Yang Jixing, Wu Ren
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-09-01
Features: Masks are remnants of primitive cultural art. Their naivety, roughness, exaggeration, distortion, weirdness, absurdity, humor, sanctity, and fierceness embody profound aesthetic styles and spiritual depth, leaving one in awe and amazement. The mask forms introduced and selected in this book are only one aspect of it. To showcase the development of mask culture, we have arranged it in a sequence such as shamanic masks, Nuo masks, and opera face paintings. The publication of this book itself is a product of the influence of the "Rescue Project of Chinese Folk Cultural Heritage" initiated by the China Folklore Society. In this book, we particularly showcase the rescue and discovery of shamanic masks and mythology by scholars in Jilin. The introductions to other masks also focus on the ongoing research, inheritance, and innovation carried out by local folk art associations and members of the China Folklore Society.
