Features: Hu Xiaoshi (1888–1962), whose given name was Guangwei and courtesy name was Xiaoshi, was also known as Qianyin and Xialu (his studio name was "Yuan Xialu"). In his later years, he used the sobriquets Zixia and Shagong. Originally from Jiaxing, Zhejiang, he grew up in Nanjing. He graduated from the Agricultural Department of the Jiangnan Normal School in 1909. He successively served as professor, department head, and dean of the College of Liberal Arts at institutions such as Beijing Women's Normal School, Wuchang Higher Normal School, Jinling University, Southeast University, and Central University. After 1949, he served as professor and dean of the College of Liberal Arts, as well as director of the library at Nanjing University. He dedicated his career to the study and teaching of ancient scripts, phonology, etymology, classics, history, the works of the Hundred Schools of Thought, Buddhist and Taoist scriptures, inscriptions, and calligraphy and painting, achieving profound expertise.
