Features: The life of the art master Wu Changshuo was extensive, and his energy was boundless. Throughout his life's comprehensive practice, study, and exploration of seal carving, calligraphy, poetry, and painting, he left behind an incalculable number of works. From what has been passed down, there are nearly 2,000 poems, over 100 essays, and more than 3,000 paintings. His calligraphic works, including those on stone drums, also exceed 1,000, and his seal carvings number around 1,000 impressions—truly remarkable. Wu Changshuo's art has both an era-specific and comprehensive nature. He first considered himself a seal carver and calligrapher, with both he and contemporary critics valuing seal carving as his primary focus, followed by poetry, calligraphy, and painting. However, when Wu Changshuo is mentioned today, he is primarily seen as a painter, with his achievements and explorations in seal carving and calligraphy often overlooked. Therefore, it is necessary to reassess Wu Changshuo from the original historical perspective.
The key to appraising Wu Changshuo's paintings and calligraphy lies in observing the spirit,, and composition; the style of his brushwork; the evolution of his calligraphic forms and their resonance with his paintings; the style of his inscriptions and seals, and so on. Wu Changshuo left behind a vast number of works, making it easy to compare them at any time. By comparing them with works from the same period, especially the masterpieces, it is not difficult to judge their authenticity. Of course, a thorough understanding of Wu Changshuo's life and the many characteristics of his art requires considerable preparation and long-term experience—it is not something that can be achieved overnight.
