Features: This book includes several "insights" the author has gained over the years in studying and researching the history of mathematics. For example, it covers the classification of ancient and modern counting systems, Thales' measurement of the pyramid, three different interpretations of the Pythagorean theorem, a comparison between Archimedes' method and Chinese Muhé Fāngxūn, the superiority of Zu Chongzhi's Mìlǜ, the rise and fall of Greek mathematics, and a new understanding of Fermat's Last Theorem, among others. The book also strives to achieve the following points:
1. Use original materials, employing photographs, facsimiles, and copies to present the true face of history.
2. Clearly cite the main arguments and referenced literature, which serves the following purposes:
a. To avoid appropriating others' work;
b. To facilitate verification and further research;
c. To ensure reliable sources.
3. The writing is both profound and accessible. Each important topic is accompanied by maps and brief introductions to geography and history, allowing readers to understand the content without needing to consult numerous reference books. The book is divided into two volumes. The first volume primarily discusses the evolution of world mathematics during its early stages and the two Greek periods, while also providing an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of mathematics in different civilizations such as ancient Egypt, ancient Babylon, ancient Greece, ancient Arabia, and ancient India. The second volume focuses on the progression of world mathematics from its early stages to the variable period and into the modern era, as well as the journey of Chinese mathematics from the pre-Qin, Han-Tang, Song-Yuan, Ming-Qing periods to the modern era, ultimately converging with the world.
