Features: Pan Tianshou's painting themes include eagles, lotuses, pines, the Four Gentlemen, landscapes, and figures, with each work featuring an extraordinary composition. His structures seek balance in danger, with forms that are concise yet convey depth. His rock formations are square and angular, with ink tones that are dense, heavy, and focused, interweaving thick and thin strokes to reveal refined and powerful brushwork. He excels in freehand bird-and-flower and landscape painting, occasionally creating figures. He is particularly skilled in painting eagles, magpies, vegetables and fruits, as well as pines and plum blossoms. His brushwork is bold, while his coloring is meticulous. His ink and color interweave dynamically, creating fresh, vigorous, and majestic compositions with boundless charm. His works are lively and captivating. Pan Tianshou's finger painting is also unique, with outstanding achievements. These works are numerous and grand in scale, such as the finger-ink floral paintings Crimson Clouds, Red Lotus, and Fresh Bloom, all depicting "lotuses facing the sun." They use splashing ink and finger staining for the petals, palm strokes for the leaves, and fingertip lines to create a vitality and artistic charm that cannot be achieved with ordinary brushwork.
When painting, Pan Tianshou meticulously considers every stroke, leaving no detail unchecked. Guided by the principle of "there is always change within constancy," he draws on the strengths of various masters to forge his own style. His subjects may be ordinary, but through his hands, they attain extraordinary artistic impact. For example, in A Corner of Xiaolongqiu, he compresses the main subject, Xiaolongqiu, to the corner of the composition. This subtle arrangement invites the viewer to first admire the majestic mountain range of Lingyan and the vibrant wildflowers before appreciating the flowing waters of Xiaolongqiu. This technique contrasts with compositions that reveal everything at once, showcasing the artist's exceptional compositional skill while also expressing his inner feelings for the ordinary.
The true value of Pan Tianshou's art lies in his bold creative spirit. He often said, "Desolate mountains and untamed rocks, secluded grasses and idle flowers—though seemingly ordinary, those with wisdom and skill can transform them into masterpieces." His calligraphy skills are also profound, having studied the styles of Zhong You and Yan Zhen in his early years, later incorporating the essence of Wei and Jin steles, ancient seals, and Han and Li calligraphy. He was also skilled in poetry and seal carving. In his daily painting, he was extremely serious and meticulous about poetry, inscriptions, and seals, never being careless. He had a deep understanding of the history and theory of painting, authoring works such as History of Chinese Painting, Gu Kaizhi, Poems from Tingtian Pavilion, and Essays on Seal Carving. He also compiled Notes on Painting from Tingtian Pavilion, among other works.
