Features: Ancient Chinese seals have a long history; later, they evolved from practical social functions to the appreciated art of seal carving, with a profound heritage. This history can be written as: (1) "History of Seals": encompassing ancient seals and literary seal carving art; (2) "History of Seal Impressions": specifically describing the development and evolution of seals through the ages; (3) "History of Seal Carving": focusing on the artistic nature of ancient seals and the emergence and development of seal carving art. This book belongs to the latter. The development of seal carving art has its own inherent laws and the laws of external objective developments. "History of Seal Carving" should not be a mere list of seal carvers but should explore the underlying patterns of development and trace the of historical progress. Therefore, some seal carvers in history, though with limited creations and not particularly high artistic standards, played a role in the history of seal carving development. Conversely, some carvers, despite numerous creations and decent artistic skills, did not significantly influence the history of seal carving. The former are included in the history, while the latter are omitted. Listing all seal carvers in one book is the task of compiling "Biographies of Seal Carvers." The development of seal carving art is closely linked to seal theories, seal albums, and research, which are extensively discussed in this book. Exploring the historical development patterns of seal carving art is a demanding endeavor. Whether the summary is comprehensive, objective, and accurate often depends on individual capabilities, which may not be sufficient. However, offering one's perspective can still contribute to the overall understanding. Based on this, I have not shied away from my limited knowledge and have strived to tackle this challenging task.
