Features: Since the 1980s, the issue of Southeast Asian Chinese investment in mainland China has been a topic of concern for academia. Although the amount of investment by Southeast Asian Chinese in mainland China is not very large, their investment, along with that of Hong Kong Chinese, has been a pioneer in China's introduction of foreign capital and has played a unique role in the social and economic development since China's reform and opening-up. Studying and exploring the current status, investment methods, and characteristics of Southeast Asian Chinese investment in mainland China, as well as how to promote China's economic development, holds significant practical importance. This book takes Southeast Asian Chinese investment in mainland China as the research subject, discussing the motivations behind such investments. It argues that Southeast Asian Chinese invest in mainland China primarily for profit, with emotions playing a secondary role. However, a considerable portion of Southeast Asian Chinese investors are driven by hometown sentiments, with their investments concentrated in their ancestral hometowns. By leveraging kinship ties and other cultural advantages, Southeast Asian Chinese have successfully converted social and cultural capital into economic capital, achieving cross-border operations with relatively less capital. A key feature of Southeast Asian Chinese investment in mainland China is the utilization of Hong Kong's favorable conditions, through which they make large-scale investments in mainland China. This approach avoids the sensitivity of Chinese investment in China while fully leveraging Hong Kong's advantages as a global financial, information, and shipping center, making it easier to attract and manage talent related to mainland affairs. Hong Kong has become a mediator and bridge for Southeast Asian Chinese enterprises investing in mainland China. Many Southeast Asian Chinese financial groups use Hong Kong as their base, treating mainland China as their primary market for overseas investment expansion. The investment of Southeast Asian Chinese in mainland China is first concentrated in special economic zones and coastal hometowns of overseas Chinese, then expanding to the interior. They have successfully introduced China into the international market and promoted the deepening of China's reform and opening-up. Through their demonstration and leadership, numerous Chinese private enterprises have rapidly developed. At the same time, Southeast Asian Chinese investment enterprises have also achieved substantial returns, strengthening their own economic. With the growing strength of Chinese enterprises, an increasing number of Chinese companies are beginning to engage in overseas investment. As intermediaries and collaborators in Chinese enterprises' overseas investments, Southeast Asian Chinese will play an important role once again.
