College Chinese

Book Description:
With the development of our economy and the enhancement of our international status, foreign exchanges have become more frequent. As Chinese college students in the new era, it is widely acknowledged that they should first master their native language while studying foreign languages. To become high-quality, well-rounded talents, college students need to absorb the essence of global culture, especially the rich and long-standing history and culture of the Chinese nation. They should strive to improve their cultural literacy and promote its development in new knowledge domains. Offering a "College Chinese" course in universities is an effective method for cultural quality education for college students. There is a strong desire among college students for the establishment of "College Chinese" courses. During their high school years, although they have undergone Chinese language studies (to a certain extent, mostly focused on exams), they have little knowledge of the fine traditions of Chinese cultural development, the systematic knowledge of Chinese literary development, and limited exposure to and deep understanding of Chinese and foreign literary masterpieces, especially their aesthetic appreciation skills are relatively weak. A considerable number of college students have a narrow way of thinking and poor imaginative ability, which directly affects their academic performance. Upper-year students struggle to write academic papers, find it difficult to interact in social practice, fail to seize favorable opportunities in fierce competition, and cannot fully articulate their viewpoints or promote their ideas. They eagerly hope to improve their cultural literacy and lay a solid foundation in humanities during their university years through teachers' analyses and guidance on classic Chinese and foreign works, so as to enhance their professional studies and facilitate their development in related fields, thereby adapting to the needs of reform, opening up, and the socialist market economy. Unfortunately, "College Chinese" has not yet been included in China's higher education teaching plans or designated as a required public course in universities. Although more than half of China's general universities offer "College Chinese" courses, there is great randomness in the selection of teaching materials, faculty allocation, and class scheduling. Because there is no unified teaching material or teaching syllabus nationwide (or even province-wide), it is difficult to guarantee the quality of this course.
