Features: The Fragments of the Sea Record (《》) is a medium-sized encyclopedic work compiled by Ye Tingjue of the Song Dynasty. The Fragments of the Sea Record is a type of encyclopedic compilation from the Song Dynasty. In terms of its editorial format, the book inherits the principle of "categorization" found in works such as The Art and Literature Collection and The Records for Beginners, dividing the entire book into sixteen sections such as Heaven, Earth, Clothing and Accessories, Food and Utensils, etc. Under these sixteen sections, there are over 500 subcategories. However, compared to the aforementioned two works, The Fragments of the Sea Record has four distinctive features:
1. Unlike The Art and Literature Collection, which divides each category into "Narrative" and "Poetry and Prose," or The Records for Beginners, which divides each category into "Narrative" and "Parallel Phrases," this book combines narrative and poetry/prose. Each entry is given a two-to-four-character subheading, which is either extracted from key terms in the quoted text below or newly composed based on the general meaning of the quoted text.
2. The quoted texts under the headings are particularly concise, ranging from four to five characters to three to four lines, with entries under twenty characters being the most numerous.
3. Many entries include both the original text and annotations.
4. Many of the terms collected in this book are fresh or newly coined words.
