Features: Liu Huanzhang (1930.12—) is from Leiting, Hebei. He specializes in sculpture. During his middle school years, he studied seal carving. In 1951, he entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts and graduated from its Sculpture Research Program in 1956, staying at the academy to engage in sculptural creation. Later, he became a researcher at the Sculpture Creation Studio of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He served as a member of the Fourth Council of the China Artists Association. His works include "Girl" (wood sculpture), "Wrestler," and "Portrait of Liu Hulan," among others. Sixteen works, including "Untitled," are collected by the National Art Museum of China. He has participated in the creation of large-scale sculptures for institutions such as the Beijing Exhibition Hall, the National Museum of Chinese History, the National Museum of the Chinese People's Armed Forces, and the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. He has published works such as "Selected Sculptures of Liu Huanzhang," "Seal Nubs of Liu Huanzhang," and "Sculptural Works of Liu Huanzhang." For a long decade, a lonely decade, and a laborious decade, as he chiseled and carved these works under the scorching sun and biting wind, he made you feel for him; as he silently produced one masterpiece after another, he moved you deeply. Still riding an old bicycle and carrying a broken basket, he walks a path unsuitable for his age. At the age of seventy, when asked when he would hang his hammer and rest his chisel, Liu Huanzhang refused to answer. Sculpture has already become a part of his life. As long as he lives, his sculpting continues.
