Features: Zhang Henshu is one of the most prolific writers in the history of modern literature in the 20th century. In the 1930s and 1940s, he won countless readers with representative works such as Spring Moon Over the Great Wall, Golden Dust Family, and Laughter and Tears. He was the best-selling writer of that time. The story of Laughter and Tears takes place in Beijing during the rule of the Beiyang Warlord government. A wealthy Jiangnan scholar, Fan Jiashu, falls in love with Shen Fengxi, a Beijing Qu Book performer. Later, Warlord General Liu sets his sights on Shen Fengxi and forces her to become his concubine. Under threat and temptation, Shen Fengxi reluctantly complies. With the help of the martial artist Guan and his daughter, Fan Jiashu attempts to rescue Shen Fengxi, but fails. Shen Fengxi, deeply traumatized, becomes mentally unstable, leading to a tragic outcome. Centered around this main plot, the novel also vividly portrays the emotional entanglements between Guan Xiugu, He Lina, and Fan Jiashu. The plot is intricate, the characters are vividly depicted, and the psychological portrayal is delicate. It is considered a classic work that still possesses timeless artistic charm to this day and has been adapted into a television drama series.
