Remembering the past is to learn for the future. As a tragic and stirring national memory, the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression has seen enduring research for 60 years. Whether in the compilation of historical materials, specialized studies, or comprehensive compilations, fruitful results have been achieved. We compiled this book with the aim of presenting a more vivid and concrete historical panorama of the war in the form of an encyclopedia, serving as both a popular read for understanding this period of history and a reference tool for retrieving knowledge related to the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. This book is the result of the efforts of a large number of historians in Shanghai. As early as the 40th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in 1985, the Shanghai Federation of Social Sciences organized scholars to begin this work, forming a preliminary draft for internal circulation. This time, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and further popularize historical knowledge about it, the Shanghai Association for Social Sciences Popularization Research took charge of the comprehensive revision of the preliminary draft. Through the joint efforts of relevant members, the formally published manuscript is now: the number of recorded events has been supplemented, increasing from 163 to 210; based on new research findings, the content of the events has been appropriately enriched and revised to strive for more accurate narration, fairer evaluation, and more standardized expression.
