Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. The dictionary selects 1,614 headwords, grouped into 763 sets, each containing no more than four words, from the common word range. These headwords share similar or related meanings but differ in connotation, usage, and other aspects.
In our middle and primary school language teaching, there has always been a strong emphasis on improving the ability to recognize and use Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires correct usage of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and articles, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two fundamental units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger language units such as sentences, paragraphs, and articles. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as a lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical structures, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a reliance on monosyllabic morphemes in compound words, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere study of shapes to become closely linked with vocabulary learning. This is why we chose to focus on characters and words when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school language education.
The Word-Phrase Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are dedicated to single characters, and three to compound words. Improving one's understanding and use of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need in language learning, making this series of reference books equally helpful for the general public. Emphasizing foundational and common usage is the principle behind the compilation of this series, and we have made efforts in the following areas:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six key topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words focus on word meaning, similar/synonymous sounds and forms, and commonly confused or easily mistaken words. These six topics are both foundational and crucial in Chinese language learning.
2. Headword Scope: The words for analysis are limited to the common range. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most common and 1,000 less common characters, with some general use characters also included. Compound words are selected with the help of lexical research findings. Synonyms are mainly chosen based on usage frequency data from The Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, generally falling within the range of 8,548 common words. For near-sound words, the focus is on those with high usage frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but distinct meanings that are prone to confusion, including those that differ between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciation. For variant forms, both the standard and variant forms are tested against a massive corpus of billions of characters, ensuring more objective and accurate selection and analysis.
3. Presentation of Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the dictionary focuses on analyzing the easily confused or misused aspects. Most dictionaries and glossaries focus on individual characters and words, seeking completeness in their internal definitions. However, to deeply understand and correctly use a character or word, one must also learn about adjacent words and their subtle differences in meaning and usage. Providing this information is precisely what this series of reference books aims to deliver to readers.
4. Explanations and Analysis: The dictionary strives to use clear, accessible language, aiming for the phrase “making the profound accessible to the masses.”
