Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of Chinese language learning. The dictionary provides analysis of easily misread characters, striving to combine explanations of sound, meaning, and logic with simple and easy-to-understand example sentences. This helps readers understand the reasons behind misreading and provides correct pronunciation guidance. It serves to supplement classroom teaching, broaden horizons, and firmly master the pronunciation of commonly used characters, thereby improving the ability to use Chinese. The dictionary includes 1,433 entries, divided into 645 groups.
Our middle and primary school Chinese language teaching places great emphasis on improving students' ability to recognize and use Chinese characters. Learning Chinese requires the correct use of words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and written passages, with the foundation being words and phrases. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—words and phrases—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to certain inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and the use of composite words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. Therefore, teaching Chinese characters has gone beyond the scope of pure morphology and is closely linked to the study of Chinese vocabulary. This is why we first chose words and phrases when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school Chinese language teaching.
The Word and Phrase Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, with three focusing on single characters and the other three on compound words. Improving one's understanding and use of Chinese words and phrases is a long-term need in language learning, so this series of reference books will also benefit general members of the public. Emphasizing fundamental and commonly used knowledge is the principle behind the creation of this series of reference books. To this end, we have made efforts in the following aspects:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address reading, writing, and usage issues, while the three volumes on compound words focus on word meaning, pronunciation similarity and identity, as well as commonly confused and easily mistaken cases. These six topics are both fundamental and important in Chinese language learning.
2. Scope of Entries: The words and phrases analyzed are limited to commonly used ones. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most commonly used characters and the 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words makes full use of the findings of lexical metrology research. For example, synonyms are mainly selected based on the data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, generally falling within the range of approximately 8,548 commonly used words. The selection of near-homophones focuses on those with high frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but different meanings, which are prone to confusion. This includes easily confused words between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciation. For variant forms, the selection and analysis of these entries are made by testing both standard and variant forms in a massive corpus containing billions of characters, ensuring greater objectivity and accuracy.
3. Presentation of Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the dictionary focuses on analyzing easily confused and easily mistaken aspects. Most general dictionaries and reference books focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to achieve a deep and correct understanding and use of a character or phrase, it is necessary to understand the neighboring words and their subtle differences, thereby mastering their distinct uses. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Explanations and Analysis: The dictionary uses colloquial and simple language as much as possible, striving to be "deep yet easily understood."
