Features: This dictionary is primarily designed for middle and high school students as well as general social readers, tailored to meet the needs of Chinese language learning. The dictionary selects entries mainly from the range of common words, including 1,129 entries with identical pronunciation and meaning but different written forms, divided into 558 groups, with no more than 3 entries per group.
Our middle and high school Chinese teaching places great emphasis on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese requires correct usage of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and texts, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger language units such as sentences, paragraphs, and texts. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as its limited morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, prevalence of monosyllabic words, and frequent compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. Therefore, Chinese character teaching has gone beyond the scope of pure form recognition and is closely linked to the study of Chinese vocabulary. This is why we chose to focus on characters and words first when planning supplementary materials for middle and high school Chinese teaching.
The Word and Character Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application abilities of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for any individual's Chinese learning, so this series of reference books will also benefit general social readers. Emphasizing fundamentality and commonality is the principle behind compiling this series of reference books, and we have made efforts in the following areas:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words focus on similar/same meanings, pronunciation and form similarities/differences, and easily confused/misused words. These six topics are both fundamental and important knowledge points in Chinese language learning.
2. Limited Scope of Analyzed Words: The selected words are confined to common usage. Single characters are mainly chosen from the range of 2,500 common characters and 1,000 less common characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words makes full use of the findings from lexical metrology research. For instance, synonyms are primarily selected based on the data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, roughly covering around 8,548 common words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those with high frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but distinct meanings that are easily confused, including colloquial pronunciations differing from standard Mandarin. For variant-form words, the selection and analysis are made more objective and accurate by comparing the correct and variant forms in a massive corpus database containing billions of characters.
3. Presentation of Word Knowledge: The introduction of word knowledge does not aim for comprehensiveness but focuses on analyzing easily confused and misused aspects. Traditional dictionaries and encyclopedias typically focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough internal definitions. However, to achieve a deep and correct understanding and application of a character or word, it is essential to understand the neighboring words and their subtle differences, thereby mastering their distinct usages. Providing this information and assistance is exactly what this series of reference books aims to deliver to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: The dictionary strives to use colloquial and simple language in definitions and analyses, aiming to achieve the goal of "making the profound clear and easy to understand."
