Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at secondary and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. The dictionary selects commonly misused characters and provides detailed analysis from aspects such as meaning, grammar, pronunciation, and usage to identify the reasons for common errors, thereby improving the ability to use Chinese characters correctly. In Chinese language teaching in schools, emphasis has always been placed on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and chapters, with the foundation lying in characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and chapters. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and the frequent formation of complex words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere study of character forms and is closely linked to vocabulary learning. This is the reason why we first selected characters and words when planning supplementary materials for Chinese language teaching in schools.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which focus on single characters, and the other three on compound words. Improving the understanding and application abilities of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning. Therefore, this series of reference books will also be helpful for general members of the public. Emphasis on fundamental and commonly used knowledge is the guiding principle behind the compilation of this series. To this end, we have made the following efforts:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six key topics. The three volumes on single characters address reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words focus on word meaning, phonetic similarity and identity, and easily confused or mistakenly used words. These six topics are both fundamental and crucial in Chinese language learning.
2. Selection of Analyzed Characters and Words: The analyzed characters are primarily limited to the 2,500 most commonly used characters and 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some additional inclusion of frequently used characters. The selection of compound words is based on the results of lexical measurement studies, with synonyms generally chosen according to the data from The Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, covering approximately 8,548 commonly used words. The selection of near-homophones focuses on those words that are highly frequent, phonetically identical or similar but semantically distinct, and may cause confusion, including those with differences in dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciations. For dysphemisms, the selection and analysis are made objectively and accurately by comparing the correct and incorrect forms in a large-scale corpus containing billions of characters.
3. Introduction to Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, this dictionary focuses on analyzing easily confused and commonly misused words. Traditional dictionaries and glossaries typically focus on individual characters and words, seeking completeness and thoroughness in their definitions. However, to gain a deep understanding and correct usage of a character or word, it is essential to understand the nuances of adjacent words and their differences in usage. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books seeks to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Efforts are made to use clear and accessible language in definitions and analyses, striving for the principle of "making the profound accessible."
