The Xianling Mausoleum Cultural Tourism Scenic Area in Jingmen City

The Xianling Mausoleum Cultural Tourism Scenic Area is located in Zhongxiang City, Jingmen City, Hubei Province. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a World Cultural Heritage site. The scenic area covers an area of approximately 183 hectares, of which the core mausoleum area is 52 hectares. The Xianling Mausoleum is the joint burial tomb of Zhu Youyuan, Emperor Gongruixian, the father of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty, and Empress Zhangsheng. It is the largest and best-preserved princely tomb among the imperial tombs of the Ming Dynasty in China and is hailed as "an outstanding representative of Ming Dynasty imperial tombs."

History and Culture

The Xianling Mausoleum was first built in the 14th year of the Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty (1519) and was completed in the 45th year of the Jiajing reign (1566), taking 47 years to complete. The tomb's owner, Zhu Youyuan, was Prince Xing during his lifetime and was posthumously honored as emperor by his son, Emperor Jiajing. Therefore, the Xianling Mausoleum has a unique layout of "one mausoleum, two tombs."

The architectural regulations of the Xianling Mausoleum both follow the imperial tomb system of the Ming Dynasty and also introduce innovations. Its features, such as the "one mausoleum, two tombs" layout, the setting of inner and outer mingtang, and the winding spirit way, are unique in the history of Chinese mausoleum architecture.

In 2000, the Xianling Mausoleum was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an important component of the "Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties," becoming Hubei Province's first World Cultural Heritage site.

Main Attractions

Spirit Way

The Spirit Way of the Xianling Mausoleum is 1,360 meters long and winds in an "S" shape. On both sides are arranged 12 pairs of stone statues, including lions, xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin, horses, and civil and military officials. The carvings are exquisite and lifelike.

One Mausoleum, Two Tombs

This is the most unique architectural feature of the Xianling Mausoleum. The front tomb is the Xingxian Prince's tomb built during Zhu Youyuan's lifetime according to princely specifications, while the rear tomb is the imperial mausoleum expanded according to imperial tomb specifications after Emperor Jiajing ascended the throne. The two treasure cities are connected by the Yaotai.

Inner and Outer Mingtang

The Xianling Mausoleum has two mingtang (man-made lakes), one inner and one outer. The outer mingtang is oval in shape and covers an area of about 18,000 square meters; the inner mingtang is circular and covers an area of about 12,000 square meters. They served multiple functions such as drainage, fire prevention, and feng shui symbolism.

Site of the Ling'en Hall

This was originally the main sacrificial building in the mausoleum area, with seven bays in width and four bays in depth. Now only the platform base and column bases remain. Through the ruins, one can still imagine the magnificent scale of the building at that time.
