Features: This is the first full-length novel in the country to reflect on labor and social security. The story takes place in Tieyuan City, an old industrial base in the central mountainous region of Northeast China. On a chilly day in late autumn of the late 20th century, a major event that shocked the nation—the protest by bankrupt coal mine workers blocking an international train—erupted in this mountain city. Subsequently, the central government dispatched a joint investigation team to S Province to investigate, and decided to conduct a social security reform pilot program in S Province, including Tieyuan City, aiming to establish a comprehensive social security system as a breakthrough to comprehensively revitalize and rejuvenate the old industrial base. Thus, centered around the social security reform, clashes of old and new ideas, battles between integrity and evil, and struggles between truth, goodness, and beauty versus falsehood, evil, and ugliness unfolded in Tieyuan City.
