Features: Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, on the southern coast of England, in 1812. His father lived a extravagant and reckless life, burdened by debts. When Dickens was 10, his father was imprisoned for debt. From then on, their lives became even more miserable. The young Dickens was sent to work as an apprentice in a shoe-polishing shop, enduring humiliation. His childhood experiences provided him with rich material for his later work, David Copperfield. At the age of 15, Dickens worked as a clerk in a law office and learned shorthand, where he had the opportunity to witness various court judgments. This experience later enabled him to vividly depict courtroom scenes in his later work, A Tale of Two Cities. Afterward, Dickens worked as a journalist for a newspaper, broadening his exposure to life. In 1836, based on his journalistic experiences, he wrote Sketches by Boz, which marked the beginning of his literary career. Oliver Twist, published in 1838, received widespread acclaim and further solidified his status as a writer. Until his death at the age of 59, his major works included A Christmas Carol (1843), Hard Times (1854), and Great Expectations (1861). Dickens was not an impromptu writer but a realist imbued with humanistic ideals. He had firsthand experience with life at the bottom of society and possessed a wealth of life experiences. He excelled at using a humorous tone to exaggerate the essential characteristics of things, presenting profound themes in an accessible way. The Life of Jesus was written in 1849 when Dickens was 38, recording his love for his children. The original book is structured as a series of stories told by Dickens to his own children, with a simple, concise style. Based on the New Testament of the Bible, it faithfully records the life of Jesus. By reading this book, we can feel Dickens' genuine paternal love for his sons and gain a deeper understanding of Jesus and Christian doctrine.
