Features: Melville, a 19th-century American writer and poet, was born into a wealthy merchant family in New York. At the age of ten, his father went bankrupt, and two years later, his father passed away. From then on, Melville began to earn a living independently, working as a bank clerk, farm laborer, shop assistant, teacher, and more, traveling from place to place for survival. Melville's first voyage was as a steward on a passenger ship to Liverpool. He then embarked on a whaling ship to the Pacific in January 1841. Over the next three years in 1844, Melville traveled to the South Pacific Islands and other places by ship, experiencing extraordinary encounters with cannibals, which later found their way into his works. Melville excelled at exploring the depths of the human psyche from unique perspectives, but his language was obscure, often using symbolism to convey themes, making it difficult to appeal to readers' tastes. He did not receive much attention at the time, but he is now recognized for his contributions. Moby-Dick, like other great works, possesses a ambiguity that invites multiple interpretations and understandings from readers. Melville did not dwell on the whale, whaling industry, or maritime adventures, but instead revealed the contradictions and conflicts between humans and nature, good and evil, spirit and flesh, and the transient and the eternal. Moby-Dick broke free from the confines of 19th-century American fiction, expressing eternal themes of humanity, and thus holds enduring artistic value.
