Features: Lincoln was born in Kentucky, USA. His father was a poor farmer, and Lincoln did not engage in hard labor from a young age and had little formal education. He later taught himself and became a lawyer in 1837. From 1834 to 1841, Lincoln was elected as a representative of Illinois. In 1858, Lincoln was nominated by the Republican Party to run for the U.S. Senate and was elected. During the campaign, he engaged in fierce debates with Stephen Douglas of the Democratic Party on the issue of slavery, gaining national fame. In 1860, Lincoln was nominated by the Republican Party as the presidential candidate in the presidential election. However, at the same time Lincoln was elected, the Southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States, and the Civil War broke out. Lincoln remained fearless in the face of crisis, firmly upheld the Union, advocated the abolition of slavery, and was determined to win the war. In the early stages of the war, the situation was unfavorable to the Northern army. In September 1862, the Confederate States entered a defensive position. In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and the war began to turn in favor of the North. On November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered a speech at Gettysburg National Cemetery, which included the famous quote that has been passed down to this day: "A government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." In 1864, Lincoln participated in the presidential election, which was taking place during the war with the outcome uncertain. However, after appointing Ulysses S. Grant as the commander-in-chief, the Northern army achieved successive victories, which undoubtedly benefited Lincoln, and he was re-elected as president. On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States surrendered, ending the Civil War. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot and killed while watching a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., and died the following day.
