Historical Culture
The core of the historical culture of Jingwu Gate · Chinese Martial Arts Park originates from the modern famous patriotic martial artist Huo Yuanjia (1868-1910) and the Jingwu Sports Association he founded. Huo Yuanjia was born in Xiaonanhe Village, Xiqing District, Tianjin (now Jingwu Town). He was a representative figure of Mizong Quan and was famous for the "Jingwu Spirit." In the early 20th century, he defeated foreign strongmen, breaking the prejudice of the "sick man of East Asia" and becoming a symbol of national spirit.
In 1910, Huo Yuanjia founded the Jingwu Gymnastics Association in Shanghai (later renamed the Jingwu Sports Association), proposing the Jingwu purposes of "patriotism, self-cultivation, justice, and helping others," which pioneered the socialized and standardized development of modern Chinese martial arts. After a century, the Jingwu Sports Association has established branches in more than 100 countries and regions around the world, becoming an important carrier for spreading Chinese martial arts and culture.
Jingwu Town in Xiqing District, where the scenic area is located, is Huo Yuanjia's hometown. In 2009, Jingwu Gate · Chinese Martial Arts Park was officially completed, integrating the Huo Yuanjia Cemetery, former residence, and newly built venues to form a cultural park combining commemoration, education, and exhibition. The Huo Yuanjia Former Residence in the park is a traditional Qing Dynasty courtyard-style building, preserving the original scenes of Huo Yuanjia's life. In 2013, it was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, becoming an important physical relic for studying modern martial arts history and the spirit of patriotism.
