Features: "Playwrights are born, not made." This saying acknowledges that a playwright must at least possess one condition shared by other artists—talent—but attempts to deny that they need the artistic education required by architects, painters, sculptors, and musicians. However, the scripts received by script reviewers fall into two categories: one is decent enough in quality but cliché in theme and treatment; the other is novel and interesting in some aspects but so poorly written that it cannot be performed. "A few years ago, Mr. Exceptional Safadi wrote in the magazine 'Literati' under the title 'The American Playwright': On this issue, the directors and managers who review scripts unanimously agree with a negative answer. Among the scripts received daily by mail, only a few contain examples that demonstrate some knowledge of the science of playwriting. Almost all the scripts appear extremely contrived and lack the substance that could be called humanity."
