Piano Tutor (Volume 4)

Author: Sun Jingcheng
Publisher: Henan University Press
Book Description:
The piano is an instrument that every music professional should master. With its wide dynamic range and rich tonal colors, it is unparalleled in performing polyphonic music. As a solo instrument, it can be played independently without the need for accompaniment from other instruments. Its captivating tonal beauty and highly advanced techniques have inspired countless performers to dedicate their lives to mastering it. As an accompaniment instrument, its powerful harmonic capabilities, diverse tonal variations, and compatibility with various vocal and instrumental ensembles make it an excellent choice for concert accompaniment. Additionally, as a tool for learning music, the piano is easy to understand and learn, with wide-ranging applications, quickly becoming a valuable assistant for music learners. Therefore, the popularity of the piano surpasses that of any other instrument.
There is an extensive body of piano music. Numerous outstanding works of various styles, genres, and types exist across history and cultures. When compiling this textbook, we considered two key factors: first, the teaching process must follow a systematic and progressive approach to ensure students' comprehensive development; second, the selected works should cover a broad range, introducing the best piano pieces from around the world. However, due to the constraints of textbook length, it is impossible to include every exceptional piece, and thus, some works we deeply regret omitting had to be excluded.
This textbook is designed for the general piano course in music programs at universities and colleges. It can be adapted to suit different student types, levels, and abilities, with the expectation that students will complete one volume within a single academic year. Additionally, it is suitable for piano majors and music enthusiasts seeking self-study.

Due to the nature of students outside piano-focused programs, we have appropriately increased the number of etudes in this textbook, including scales, arpeggios, and other fundamental exercises, as well as targeted finger technique exercises from Hanon and Marguerite Long. These additions aim to enhance students' technical skills and better meet the needs of non-piano majors. In terms of repertoire, we have also selectively included more Chinese and modern works, a feature distinguishing this textbook from others.
The textbook alternates between four major types of works: etudes, polyphonic pieces, sonatas, and solo pieces, allowing students to achieve comprehensive development in piano performance techniques through its study.
Due to our limited expertise and experience, there may be flaws and errors in the textbook's structure and曲目 selection. We sincerely welcome scholars and experts to offer criticisms and corrections.
