Brief Introduction:
Solfège is an essential basic skill for learning music, a technically oriented foundational course that systematically trains note-reading abilities, develops musical hearing, and prepares students for other music courses.
A good textbook is a crucial condition for improving teaching quality. In the matter of textbook selection, due to the lack of nationally standardized textbooks for solfège teaching in music faculties of higher learning and textbooks suitable for inter-university exchange at that time, we had to rely on textbooks from domestic and international art academies. Additionally, driven by the spirit of self-reliance, we compiled some textbooks primarily consisting of folk songs and excerpts from famous works from both China and the world. However, when using these textbooks for solfège skill training, various issues arose, mainly because they did not align with the teaching requirements of higher learning institutions or the actual needs of students. Moreover, some of the melodies were familiar to students, which was not conducive to note-reading and singing training. After反复 thinking and practicing, I decided to attempt writing this tutorial, with the aim of systematically organizing the basic teaching content of monophonic solfège and improving teaching quality in a progressive and integrated manner.
This tutorial was written in accordance with the "Outline for Solfège and Aural Training in Music Majors of Higher Learning Institutions" issued by the Ministry of Education in 1981. The preliminary draft was trialed in the music department of Henan University and several other partner institutions starting from 1983.
The tutorial consists of fourteen chapters and 500 exercises, designed for use over two academic years for undergraduate teaching. Exercises should be sung using fixed-do notation, or, as practical circumstances require, movable-do notation may be adopted.
As the tutorial begins with basic training, it is also suitable for music training classes, advanced courses, and music enthusiasts with a theoretical foundation in music.
During the writing and teaching practice of this tutorial, Mr. Xiong Yongliang of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Professor Gao Dengzhou of Nanjing University of the Arts, Professor Jin Huade of Central China Normal University, and colleagues from other institutions and our own department provided invaluable suggestions. Special thanks are hereby extended to them.
Although this tutorial has been revised repeatedly over the years in teaching practice, it is limited by my level. If there are any shortcomings, I sincerely welcome corrections.
