What does embryonic day 3 mean

Patient's question:

Doctor, my partner and I have been married for many years without children. We are undergoing IVF, and today the hospital said D3 embryo. What is the meaning of D3 embryo?

Doctor's answer:

When undergoing in vitro fertilization, the embryo and cryoprotectant are loaded into a cryopreservation tube. After cooling, the embryo is made to become dormant, and then it is stored in liquid nitrogen. Generally, embryo freezing is performed when multiple embryos are cultured simultaneously, ensuring that the fresh embryo is implanted while the remaining high-quality embryos are frozen for storage. These frozen embryos can be thawed later in natural or artificial cycles and implanted into the uterine cavity to increase the chances of conception.
Embryo transfer using frozen embryos can be done in two ways: day 3 (d3) and day 5 (d5), each with its own advantages. D3 embryos are blastocysts, which are easier to implant, while d5 embryos are blastocysts, which are more likely to survive.
