Scientific socialism is an important discipline guiding the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics in our country. The "General Theory of Scientific Socialism" edited by Song Shichang, President of the Shandong Academy of Social Sciences, and published by the People's Publishing House in August 2004, is a monumental work worth reading in this field. The book has 400,000 words and is divided into four volumes. The first volume discusses Marx and Engels' scientific socialism and the international communist movement of the 19th century. The second volume covers Lenin's socialist theory, the victory of socialism in one country, and the world socialist movement in the first half of the 20th century. The third volume focuses on Mao Zedong's socialist thought, the establishment of the socialist system in China, and the world socialist movement during the period of socialist victory in multiple countries. The fourth volume explores the successful exploration of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the diversification of socialist models in the world socialist movement. The four volumes are structured around the four stages, four leaps, and four high points of the development of scientific socialism, offering a broad perspective.
The first stage spans from the 19th century to the end of the 19th century. Initially, it begins with the development from utopian socialism to scientific socialism, with the publication of the "Manifesto of the Communist Party" on February 2, 1848, marking the completion of the "first theoretical leap" of socialism. This is followed by the practice of socialism in Europe and America. The second stage extends from the late 19th century to the late 1940s, during which socialism expanded from one country to multiple countries. The representative figure of the second leap in human understanding and practice of socialism is Lenin, marked by the birth of the world's first socialist country, as well as the subsequent construction and initial expansion of socialism in the Soviet Union and other countries. The third stage runs from the late 1940s to the late 1970s, a period when scientific socialism "developed from practice in one country to practice in multiple countries and formed a global socialist system." The main theoretical achievements of this period include Mao Zedong Thought, while socialist movements also made progress in some developed capitalist and developing countries. The fourth stage begins in the 1980s, with the main theoretical achievements being Deng Xiaoping Theory. In practice, China's exploration of socialism with Chinese characteristics achieved significant success, and the diversification of socialist models worldwide saw new developments.
The book examines how progress on the socialist path has within the framework of scientific socialist theory and the process of global socialist practice, which is very helpful for improving the socialist awareness and national pride of cadres and young students.
