The history of Singapore is a magnificent epic filled with the spice trade, pirate legends, colonial influences, and the blood and tears of growth. In the 7th century, Singapore was known as Temasek, a trade center of the ancient Srivijaya Empire of Sumatra. The name "Singapore" originates from the Sanskrit "Singapura," which has a beautiful legend. Singapore was formerly known as Temasek. It was established in the 8th century and became part of the Srivijaya Empire of Sumatra. Legend has it that in the 11th century, Prince Sri Parameswara of the Srivijaya Kingdom in Sumatra settled in Palembang after marrying the daughter of the Queen of Palembang. One day, while hunting with his wife and entourage, Sri Parameswara chased a deer and came upon a rock, where he accidentally spotted a stretch of silvery-white beach in the distance. His followers told him that the place was called Temasek. So, Sri Parameswara and his followers took a boat to the location but encountered a fierce storm on the way. The boat was on the verge of sinking, and they had to throw all their belongings into the sea. However, the storm remained intense, with waves continuously flooding the boat. In the end, Sri Parameswara had no choice but to throw his remaining crown into the sea. Strangely enough, the storm immediately calmed down. They happily rowed the boat to the shores of Temasek and finally reached their destination.
After arriving in Temasek, Sri Parameswara first rested on the grassy banks of the river and then went hunting with his followers in the nearby forest. Suddenly, they spotted a strange creature with a black chest, a red body, slightly larger than a goat, and extremely agile and strong. When the creature saw Sri Parameswara and his group, it immediately fled into the forest. Sri Parameswara did not know the name of the creature and asked his followers. An older follower told him, "That is a lion." Hearing this, Sri Parameswara was delighted, believing it to be a lucky place, and decided to stay. He renamed Temasek as Singapura. "Singa" means lion, and "pura" means city, so Singapura translates to "Lion City." This is the origin of the names Singapore and Lion City.
