Features: The author has a special interest in breast reconstruction. In 1965, based on experimental research in microsurgery, she transferred a composite skin flap containing mammary glands from the lower abdomen of dogs to the prefrontal region. After pregnancy, the transferred mammary glands were still able to secrete milk to nourish the puppies. On December 28, 1967, she participated in a special symposium on "Breast Surgery" organized by Professor Masao Fujioka, a renowned authority on breast surgery at Gunma University at the time. The discussion covered breast cancer, starting from radical mastectomy to extended radical mastectomy, surgical endocrine therapy, non-standard radical mastectomy, and breast diseases. The final topic was breast reconstruction. Professor Fujioka shared his views on congenital deformities and postoperative scars. I addressed congenital anomalies such as polythelia, poly, gynecomastia, inverted nipples, and hypoplastic breasts (including underdevelopment and asymmetry). I also mentioned the idea of attempting allotransplantation after autologous transplantation in dogs. Professor Fujioka replied with a smile, "How about transplanting the remaining breast tissue from the mother to the defect in her daughter (laugh)." This left a strong impression on me. With the emergence of adjuvant diseases following implant and injection methods, there was no discussion about post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. Therefore, Professor Fujioka concluded that for congenital or acquired deformities and distortions, more advanced surgical techniques will be needed in the future. Especially in terms of true breast reconstruction, Japan's level is lower than that of Europe and America, so it must be vigorously developed.
A quarter of a century has passed since then, and today, this book, Breast Plastic Surgery, has finally been published. It begins with anatomy and pathology, covering a wide range of topics such as benign and malignant diseases, various surgical techniques, and post-mastectomy quality of life. Written by authorities active in their respective fields, the academic level of this book far surpasses that of the symposium. The content is both advanced and practical, undoubtedly helpful for colleagues engaged in breast reconstruction. It is believed that this book can meet Professor Fujioka's expectations. If he were still alive, he would surely burst into laughter with joy.
Recently, several books on breast reconstruction have been published in Europe and America, but their main readers are Westerners. For Japanese readers to understand these books, they must think in a Western way, making the publication of this book even more timely. Moreover, a specialized book describing benign and malignant breast diseases and various deformities from the perspective of plastic surgery has not been published in Japan before. This book starts with the anatomy of the blood supply to the musculocutaneous flaps commonly used in breast reconstruction, offering a unique description of breast morphology from an aesthetic perspective. From the pathology of breast diseases to the treatment of various deformities and distortions, and from the injection method of breast implants to various cosmetic surgeries, it provides detailed descriptions. The book focuses on and thoroughly introduces the selection of cases, indications, contraindications, various reconstruction methods, and postoperative management of breast reconstruction. With numerous illustrations and photographs, it vividly depicts the process and outcomes of breast reconstruction techniques. This book is of great reference value for general surgeons, breast specialists, and plastic surgeons.
