Features: Phrasal verbs are one of the difficulties in English. First, the meaning of phrasal verbs is not simply a combination of verbs, adverbs, prepositions, and other small words; they are often difficult to understand from the literal meaning. Second, the grammatical collocations are challenging to use. It is often unclear whether the verb is transitive or intransitive, whether the small word following it is an adverb or a preposition, or if both can be used. It is also unclear whether the small word follows the verb closely or can be separated. Third, it is unclear about the usage context and scope. Fourth, synonymous, near-synonymous, and antonymous phrasal verbs are often easily confused. So far, the phrasal verb dictionaries or comprehensive dictionaries published domestically and internationally that satisfactorily address these issues are primarily the Longman Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs, edited by Rosemary Courtney, published by Longman Publishing Group Limited in the UK in 1983, which provides convenience for English learners and workers. This dictionary has the following features:
1. Comprehensive. It includes over 12,000 phrasal verb entries, including verb + adverb, verb + preposition, verb + adverb + preposition, idiomatic expressions of phrasal verbs, and verb + adjective, verb + pronoun, etc. The definitions are rich, clear, and specific.
2. Scientifically arranged for easy reference. The entire book is arranged in alphabetical order. If a phrasal verb form has several grammatical collocations, they are arranged in the order of verb + adverb, verb + preposition, verb + adverb + preposition. Within the same entry, the definitions are listed first for non-idiomatic meanings, then for idiomatic collocations, and finally for idiomatic expressions that include the phrasal verb.
3. Accessible and easy to understand. The example sentences used are both typical and close to daily life, making them easy to comprehend.
4. The usage context and scope are clearly noted.
5. The grammatical annotations are very specific. In addition to indicating transitive and intransitive verbs and their grammatical collocations (see the grammatical codes of phrasal verbs), it also indicates the tenses and voices in which they are used.
6. More importantly, this dictionary categorizes synonymous, near-synonymous, and antonymous phrasal verbs and marks them with → symbols for easy reference.
With its comprehensive, scientific, and accessible features, this dictionary clearly lists the complex and difficult-to-master phrasal verbs in front of readers, making it relatively complete among similar dictionaries. The A-Q sections, as well as the preface and the grammatical codes of phrasal verbs, were translated by Shi Xiaoshu, while the R-Z sections were translated by Zhu Yuan. Additionally, Luo Jizhang, Hou Xueyan, Zhang Chuanfu, Long Tengrui, and Xiang Dibei participated in the translation of the N-P sections. Sheng Rongrong made certain contributions to the format of the A-Q sections. This dictionary was proofread and revised by Liu Bangchen, Zeng Yuelin, and Yao Deling. The editor-in-chief, Jiang Xijin, put in a great deal of effort in its preparation. We sincerely thank them for their contributions.
