Orphaned Jane Eyre is sent to Lowood School by her aunt, where she endures torment. As a grown woman, she applies for a position as a governess at Thornfield Manor, but the master, Rochester, is a melancholic and enigmatic man. Jane is moved by his deep affection and invests her heart in him. However, a mysterious atmosphere still lingers in the manor. Just before their wedding, a lawyer suddenly visits and accuses Rochester of bigamy, revealing that his first wife was the madwoman Bertha. Jane hastily leaves Thornfield Manor. She returns to her aunt's house but often hears Rochester's calls. When she returns to Thornfield Manor, it has been burned down by the madwoman, leaving only ruins and a blind Rochester.
