Features: The ancient socio-historical phenomenon of folk culture has almosted the entire history of human culture, permeating the lives and productive activities of peoples across various eras and regions around the world. Folk culture studies is a young, interdisciplinary discipline that has emerged in the contemporary era, dedicated to researching the objective laws governing folk culture. As concepts with inherent attributes of thinking forms, folk culture and folk culture studies are subject to change along with the development of social history and human cognition—they are not eternal or unchanging. Thus, by tracing the trajectory of the evolution of these concepts, one can observe the various achievements of human thinking in the production, development, and historical progression of research in both folk culture and folk culture studies. The major of folk culture was newly established by the Chinese Department of the Central Radio and Television University. To address the issue of textbooks for the foundational courses of this major, the Chinese Department of the Central Radio and Television University and the Folk Culture Department of the Ministry of Culture organized us to compile this book, "Folk Culture Studies." In early 1992, at a cultural station in a small town near Qingshan Reservoir in Lin'an County, we studied the system and content of this textbook and drafted the teaching syllabus. Starting in April, we began the work of writing and revising the textbook based on the approved teaching syllabus. In the golden autumn of October, we made further revisions in accordance with the opinions of the review meeting for the "Folk Culture Studies" textbook of the Chinese Department of the Central Radio and Television University's folk culture major, which finally completed the compilation of this book.
