Features: The Compendium of Chinese Folk Musical Instruments·Solo Works is organized into 15 sections based on the commonly used Chinese folk musical instruments. The main characteristics of these 15 sections are as follows:
1. The repertoire is rich in content, diverse in themes and styles, and vivid in musical characteristics. These works were carefully selected through long-term artistic and teaching practices from a large number of traditional, folk, and composed pieces. They represent the culmination of 20th-century Chinese folk instrumental solo music and hold historical significance.
2. The selection of repertoire reflects principles of representativeness and practicality. With a focus on combining ideological and artistic value, the pieces selected are either recognized by the authors or widely used in the music community, ensuring academic authority. Attention was also given to selecting representative works that showcase the technical development of each instrument at a certain stage. Additionally, pieces that have been validated by history, hold a certain historical status, and are commonly used in performance and teaching were prioritized.
3. The selection of repertoire balances systematicity and accessibility. The technical difficulty of the works covers beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with an ordered progression from easier to more challenging, reflecting systematic and progressive teaching principles. Extensive efforts were made to standardize notation and performance symbols to ensure accuracy. Most of the included pieces were revised and proofread by the author.
The sanxian works collected in this book primarily feature the most popular and influential large sanxian and small sanxian pieces in China, along with a selection of multi-stringed sanxian works. The book includes 148 works of various genres and themes, including solo, ensemble, and concerto pieces. The ensembles include sanxian duets, zhonghu sanxian duets, sanxian pipa duets, and violin sanxian duets. The collected works consist of folk and traditional pieces, as well as composed and arranged works, with some transcribed from other instruments. Most of the works included have been tested by time and the public. A small number, though lacking historical validation, are recommended by the compilers for their novelty.
The pieces are generally arranged in order of increasing technical difficulty, but the stylistic unity of the works is also considered. For example, Henan banhead tunes and the Thirteen String Solos are grouped together to facilitate reader use.
