Publishing Date: 2005-03-01
Features: The "English Curriculum Standard" promulgated by the Ministry of Education (referred to as "New Curriculum Standard") requires that English reading training be strengthened in primary and secondary schools, cultivating students' comprehensive reading abilities, improving reading speed, expanding vocabulary, broadening knowledge, and explicitly stipulates that students at each grade level must complete a certain number of words of English extracurricular reading. To support the implementation of the Ministry of Education's "English Curriculum Standard" and promote the development of English teaching in primary and secondary schools, we have organized English experts from relevant universities, excellent teachers from the UK and the US teaching in China, and core teaching staff from key primary and secondary schools across the country to jointly compile this series of "New Curriculum Standard English Reading" books. This series focuses on strengthening English reading training, with fresh and diverse materials, organically integrating emotional attitudes, learning strategies, language knowledge, and language skills into comprehensive English reading. Moreover, based on the latest teaching and examination trends, it provides reading comprehension exercises, striving to possess the following characteristics:
1. Forward-looking. Adhering to the guidance of quality-oriented education, it emphasizes student-centeredness, fully stimulating their reading interest, and comprehensively improving their reading abilities.
2. Novelty. Closely monitoring new curriculum reform information and actively reflecting the latest teaching research achievements to promote the improvement of students' humanistic qualities.
3. Contemporary relevance. The selected reading materials focus on society and life, are rich in contemporary, and help broaden students' cultural horizons.
This series includes 15 volumes, ranging from fifth grade (upper and lower) in primary school to third grade (upper and lower) in high school (Grade 9 is a single volume). It is required to be written in accordance with the latest teaching philosophy of the New Curriculum Standard, appropriately aligning with current primary, junior, and senior high school English textbooks, complementing practical teaching while also providing a moderate level of advancement.
In the primary school volumes, we have invited American English teachers to write a series of short stories and dialogues reflecting the lives of children abroad. The content is vivid, the language lively, and the stories full of charm. Additionally, based on the characteristics of the texts, important language points are explained, addressing the deficiency of current textbooks that only include texts without explanations.
In the junior high school volumes, we focus on selecting concise and impactful articles, featuring four sections: "Reading Starting Line," "Reading Refueling Station," "Reading Grand Stage," and "Reading New Realm," accompanied by various forms of exercises to enhance students' reading interest and broaden their knowledge.
In the senior high school volumes, we have four sections: "Test Listening Scenery," "Reading Pedestrian Street," "Classic Refueling Station," and "Reading Grand Stage," further strengthening reading inference skills. In the second volume of senior high school, we include the national college entrance examination English reading questions from 2001 to 2004 to help students understand the actual requirements of the exam and achieve better results.
To enable students to improve their reading skills while also enhancing their English listening and pronunciation skills, each volume of the series is accompanied by 1–2 audio cassettes for convenience in teaching.
We hope this series can make positive contributions to promoting English teaching reform in primary and secondary schools and look forward to receiving feedback from teachers and students to make it an outstanding reading material that meets the needs of English learning in the new century.
