Actually, the dormitory I’m living in now is just a former abandoned factory that has been renovated. The skilled craftsmen hired by the school did some painting, and it became our brand-new dormitory. It’s still a fairly simple project. On the school website, it’s claimed to be a result of the school’s development and expansion. I felt sick to my stomach. This shoddy renovation dormitory is right next to the wide highway below. The roaring of passing cars isn’t even the worst of it—when a heavy-duty truck goes by, the entire building—no exaggeration—shakes so hard that everyone in the dorm moves with it. To be honest, at first, it wasn’t easy. The first few floors of the building didn’t get the good rooms. But the environment shapes people. After two or three weeks, we’ve all trained ourselves into a hard-to-startle, sleep-through-nothing kind of skill. I’d bet if there were an earthquake like the Tangshan one, everyone in this building would be buried in their sleep. Even if a few people woke up, they’d just think it was a truck passing by and roll over to sleep again.
I’m on the rooftop, feeling the tremors of the entire building beneath my feet—really, it does feel like something. Sitting there, facing the sunset, a faint ray of light comes in, and I suddenly feel old. When I first arrived, I’d go to bed early and wake up early. I could still see the sunrise when I got up. Now, I’m always lazy and never see the sunrise anymore. Only the evening’s twilight isn’t missed.
