The Jieziyuan Huazhuan is a long-standing, widely circulated, and highly effective introductory book on painting techniques. Mr. Gu selected its essential elements, sharing his personal insights and experiences to highlight the key principles of practice. He overcame the monotonous and rigid limitations caused by woodblock printing, reviving the lively and vibrant brushwork and artistic spirit of the teaching manuscripts. Some of the manuscripts were demonstrations created in class based on students' requests. With profound and concise expression, they clearly help beginners understand the rich and subtle aspects of Chinese painting and enhance their sensitivity to these elements. Mr. Gu, with his deep cultivation, elevated the fundamental formulas and techniques to an artistic level. His brushwork is simple yet full of profound artistic charm, demonstrating to beginners that the depth of art is not limited to grand masterpieces. Many outstanding landscape painters today have benefited from Mr. Gu Kunbo's teachings. His works remain an ideal foundation for the Landscape Painting Department of the China Academy of Art.
