Features: Under the circumstances where reforms in the curriculum system of design and art education have not yet been implemented top-down or bottom-up, and where no bold, forward-looking reforms have been carried out in higher education, using textbook development to align course content with actual social needs, keeping pace with the times, and adjusting for issues within the curriculum system is a reasonable and effective approach. Especially in the current situation where there is an overflow of various textbooks, teaching materials, and even so-called monographs, doing so is particularly necessary and holds a transitional significance. For this reason, Hunan University Press organized experts and scholars from nearly 30 institutions across the country specializing in design and art to compile this series of textbooks over a period of nearly two years. The main purpose of this effort is to promote the healthy development of design and art through the compilation and publication of these textbooks. To achieve this goal, experts were organized twice for deliberation to determine the types of textbooks, aiming to establish a textbook system that aligns with the development of the times and the improvement of the discipline. After repeated deliberation, 26 textbooks were selected as the foundational textbooks for design and art education. This series of textbooks strives to highlight three key features: a distinct design perspective—reflecting the modern characteristics of design, market-oriented, and international trends; a strong sense of the times—new concepts, new content, new materials, and examples; and outstanding practicality—emphasizing the practical and applied aspects of design disciplines, with a focus on teaching needs.
In terms of writing, this book emphasizes the combination of theory and practice. To cater to modern students, the authors present basic theories visually in a graphic and textual format, integrating the concepts and forms of ancient and modern graphic elements from around the world into specific design teaching research. This allows learners to appreciate outstanding graphic design works from China and abroad while studying graphic design theory, gaining inspiration from them. Although modern design education in China started relatively late, it has developed extremely rapidly since the late 1980s. One of the most prominent manifestations of this is the establishment of design programs by various institutions, continuously expanding their enrollment. Why is this the case? On one hand, design and art are closely related to socioeconomic and daily life, capable of creating beauty in production and life. With China's rapid economic development, there is naturally a huge demand for design talent. On the other hand, China's design and art development started relatively late and has long been in a state of imitation and experience-based practices, resulting in a weak accumulation of talent.
