Features: New English Extensive Reading Course is designed for teaching use in the first and second years of English majors in higher education institutions. After studying this series of textbooks, students can expand their knowledge of the cultural backgrounds of English-speaking countries, enrich their English vocabulary, and improve their English reading skills. According to the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education, extensive reading courses differ from integrated English courses as they belong to single-skill training courses. The characteristics of extensive reading courses are reflected in both the "extensiveness" and "reading" aspects. In terms of "extensiveness," the selected language materials cover encyclopedic knowledge, including various aspects of social life. At the same time, the styles of the language materials are diverse, including literary works, as well as narrative texts, expository texts, argumentative texts, news, advertisements, and other genres with different writing styles. The goal is to improve reading speed. Extensive reading courses involve a large volume of reading, which is also one of the differences from integrated English courses. Through extensive reading, students gradually expand their vocabulary. Extensive reading courses should help students living in the information age to quickly and accurately obtain and process information through reading. The language materials selected for New English Extensive Reading Course cover various fields such as the social, political, economic, cultural, historical, journalistic, religious, sports, medical, literary, folk customs, and popular science aspects of English-speaking countries. Each unit is divided into three parts. Part 1 is to be handled in class, and students are not required to preview the vocabulary. The vocabulary test words are mostly potentially confusing words or important common words selected from Section A of the text. The texts are arranged from easy to difficult. Reading methods are systematically introduced step by step, systematically introducing various reading skills. Vocabulary exercises are introduced in , the second volume, and word form changes are practiced in the third and fourth volumes. Cloze tests focus on testing students' reading comprehension skills and cultivating their sense of language. Supplementary vocabulary lists include words related to the topic, aiming to help students expand their vocabulary. The texts selected for Part 2 are longer than those in Part 1, providing in-depth or supplementary content on related topics for students to read outside of class. Teachers can check them in class or provide appropriate explanations based on the texts. Part 3 includes three to four short passages on related topics, primarily used for fast reading training. Each unit has two reflection questions at the end for students to discuss in class or outside of class.
