Features: Since the publication of English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People as a senior university English textbook in 2002, it has been warmly welcomed and cherished by senior university students and a broad readership of middle-aged and elderly people across the country, receiving unanimous praise. The author expresses deep gratitude on this occasion.
According to incomplete statistics, English classes in senior universities in dozens of provinces and cities nationwide have adopted English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People as their textbook. The book is intended for use by senior university students for two to three years. Students with higher proficiency have already completed the book by June of this year, while those with lower proficiency will finish it in the first half of next year. Both groups of students urgently hope that the author will compile a sequel to English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People to serve as a continuation, ensuring that students can continue learning after completing the original book and further improve their English skills. Additionally, middle-aged and elderly friends with some English foundation also need a textbook suitable for their continued learning. To meet the demands of senior friends nationwide and live up to the expectations of dedicated readers, the author, despite advanced age, took time out amidst busy schedules to finally compile the sequel to English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People. This is a new contribution by the author to the cause of senior education at the age of seventy.
For distinction, the original English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People and its revised edition have been renamed English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Beginner's Edition), while the sequel is titled English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Advanced Edition). English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Advanced Edition) can be used in conjunction with English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Beginner's Edition), but as it is self-contained, it can also be used independently. In particular, middle-aged and elderly friends with some English foundation can directly study this textbook.
The writing purpose of English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Advanced Edition) is consistent with that of English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Beginner's Edition): to build a solid foundation in English, maintain a dialogue-based approach, expand vocabulary, and enhance English speaking and reading skills.
This book is suitable for use in senior universities for two to three years, requiring 250–300 hours of instruction. The book consists of 30 units, each featuring dialogues, texts, and exercises. The dialogues and texts cover a wide range of topics, are fresh and engaging, and are supplemented with vocabulary lists and notes on difficult points to facilitate self-study. Appendix 1 lists 100 common English proverbs with translations, Appendix 2 provides answers to the exercises for each unit, Appendix 3 offers reference translations of the dialogues and texts in each unit, and Appendix 4 presents a master vocabulary list with approximately 1,200 words and phrases (excluding words and phrases that have appeared in the sentence patterns and dialogues of English for Middle-Aged and Elderly People (Beginner's Edition)). Each unit is accompanied by audio recordings of dialogues and texts by native English teachers.
