Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area, Bijie City

The Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area in Bijie City is located at the border between Dafang County and Qianxi City, Guizhou Province, and is a national 5A-level tourist attraction. The scenic area covers a total area of more than 600 square kilometers, of which the natural rhododendron forest belt is 1–3 kilometers wide and stretches for more than 50 kilometers. It is the largest, most species-rich, and most enchanting primitive rhododendron forest in China, and enjoys the reputation of "Earth's Colorful Ribbon" and "World's Garden." The scenic area is home to 41 species, including Rhododendron delavayi, large white-flowered rhododendron, water-red rhododendron, and pearly dew rhododendron, with representatives of all five rhododendron subgenera in the world. The flowers are diverse in color and dazzling. In addition, there are villages of ethnic minorities such as the Yi and Miao, with unique architectural styles and rich ethnic customs.

History and Culture

The Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area has a long history, and the region where it is located is an area inhabited by ethnic minorities such as the Yi and Miao. These ethnic minorities have rich cultural traditions and unique folk customs. Traditional festivals such as the Yi Torch Festival, Yi New Year, and the Miao Tiaohua Festival are important expressions of local ethnic culture. During the festivals, people wear festive attire, sing and dance, creating a lively scene.

Historically, this rhododendron forest was regarded by local ethnic minorities as a sacred place. Ancient Yi songs contain descriptions and praise of the rhododendron forest, and the Yi people regard rhododendrons as a symbol of good fortune. Over time, the beauty of Baili Rhododendron gradually became known to the outside world, and it has become a famous tourist destination in Guizhou and even across China.

Main Attractions

Pudi Scenic Area

Pudi Scenic Area is one of the core scenic areas of Baili Rhododendron. Here, the rhododendron forest is vast and rich in flower species, including Rhododendron delavayi, charming rhododendron, and other varieties. During the flowering season each year, rhododendrons bloom all over the mountains and plains—red like fire, pink like rosy clouds, and white like snow—forming a colorful sea of flowers. The scenic area also has an observation deck, where visitors can climb up and overlook the entire sea of flowers, enjoying the spectacular view. In addition, there is a Yi Ethnic Customs Town in Pudi Scenic Area, where visitors can experience the traditional culture and folk customs of the Yi people.

Jinpo Scenic Area

Jinpo Scenic Area is also one of the highlights of Baili Rhododendron. Its rhododendrons are famous for their graceful tree shapes and large flowers. The large white-flowered rhododendron is one of the signature species in Jinpo Scenic Area. Its flowers are as white as snow and can reach about 20 centimeters in diameter. The Suoma Flower Bridge spans the rhododendron forest; walking on the bridge feels like being in a sea of flowers. Jinpo Scenic Area also has several flower-viewing spots and leisure areas, providing visitors with a good environment for viewing and resting.

Yishan Flower Valley Scenic Area

Yishan Flower Valley Scenic Area attracts many visitors with its unique pastoral scenery and rich floral landscape. In addition to rhododendrons, large areas of lavender, verbena, and other flowers are planted in the scenic area, presenting different color landscapes in different seasons. The scenic area has a parent-child amusement park, a camping base, and other facilities, making it suitable for family outings. At the same time, it retains elements of Yi culture, and visitors can experience the traditional Yi way of life.


Recommended Routes

Recommended route: If time is sufficient, it is recommended to spend two days. On the first day, go to Pudi Scenic Area in the morning, take the sightseeing bus to visit various attractions, climb the observation deck to enjoy the panoramic view of the flower sea, and have local food in or around the scenic area at noon. In the afternoon, continue visiting Pudi Scenic Area and experience Yi customs in depth. On the second day, go to Jinpo Scenic Area in the morning to see signature flowers such as the large white-flowered rhododendron and stroll across the Suoma Flower Bridge. After lunch, go to Yishan Flower Valley Scenic Area in the afternoon to enjoy the pastoral flower landscape and experience parent-child activities or camping. If time is tight, choose a one-day tour of Pudi and Jinpo: visit Pudi Scenic Area in the morning and Jinpo Scenic Area in the afternoon.


Travel Tips:

It is recommended to visit from mid-March to early May, during the flowering season, when you can enjoy the most gorgeous sea of rhododendrons. Check the weather forecast in advance and choose sunny weather for better photos.

The scenic area is large, so it is recommended to wear comfortable sneakers or flat shoes for long walks.

Bring a camera or mobile phone with sufficient memory and battery to record the beautiful flower sea.

If you plan to camp in the scenic area, prepare camping equipment such as tents and sleeping bags in advance, and follow the scenic area's camping regulations.

When tasting local food, choose formal restaurants to ensure food hygiene.

Protect the scenic environment. Do not spit or litter; put garbage in designated bins.

Do not pick flowers while viewing rhododendrons, as this may damage the ecological environment.

Transportation:

Public transportation: From downtown Bijie, you can take a special bus to Baili Rhododendron; the journey takes about 1.5 hours and the fare is about 30 yuan. From Jinyang Bus Station in Guiyang, there are direct buses to Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area; the journey takes about 3 hours and the fare is about 80 yuan.

Self-driving: From downtown Bijie, drive along the Hangrui Expressway, get off at the Baili Rhododendron Toll Station, and follow the road signs to the scenic area. The total distance is about 70 kilometers and the drive takes about 1 hour. From Guiyang, take the Guiqian Expressway, Qianda Expressway, and others; the total distance is about 150 kilometers and the drive takes about 2.5 hours.

Tourist charter: You can book a tourist charter service in Bijie or at travel agencies and hotels in Guiyang, making it convenient to arrange your itinerary freely. The cost depends on the vehicle type and itinerary.

Opening Hours:

Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area is open all year round. In peak season (mid-March to early May), opening hours are 07:00–19:00 (ticket sales and entry stop at 18:00); in off-season (mid-May to early March of the following year), opening hours are 08:30–17:30 (ticket sales and entry stop at 17:00). On statutory holidays or during peak travel periods, the scenic area may adjust its opening hours according to actual conditions. Visitors can check the scenic area's official information in advance and arrange their itinerary reasonably.
