Features: Calligraphy is not only aesthetically pleasing in form and appearance but also a reflection of an individual's overall artistic achievement. Looking at the great calligraphers of past generations, some excelled in elegant lines, others in vigorous strokes, and some were renowned for their unrestrained and graceful structures. Therefore, compiling and publishing calligraphy books by categorizing them by script styles and collecting works by multiple calligraphers is necessary, while compiling the works of great calligraphers in different scripts from different periods is equally important. This approach can provide materials for scholars and experts in research and textual criticism, as well as serve as models for calligraphy enthusiasts at various levels to study and practice. It can also allow a broad readership to appreciate the splendor of calligraphy without leaving their homes. This is the purpose and objective of compiling and publishing the series "Historical Masters of Calligraphy."
The long and rich history of calligraphy in our great motherland has been written by masters such as the Two Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi), Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Ou Yangxi, and Zhao Mengfu. They left behind countless masterpieces of calligraphy for later generations, providing our editorial team with a vast pool of choices for compiling "A Grand View of Calligraphy by Historical Masters."
This series is grand in scale, starting with the "Sage of Calligraphy" Wang Xizhi and spanning from the Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, up to the early Republic of China. It has selected over fifty calligraphers of enduring fame, compiling their representative works and publishing them in chronological order. This book includes Yan-style regular script works such as the Dapota Stele, Dongfang Shuo Huazan Stele, and Yan Qinli Stele, as well as running script works like the Cai Mingyuan Collection and Liu Taichong Collection, and cursive-running script works such as the Draft of Eulogy for My Nephew and the Collection of Debating Seating Positions.
