Rulin Wai Shi Data Compilation

Author: Zhu Yixuan
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2003-02-01
Features: To facilitate the teaching and research of classical novels, we have compiled and published materials accumulated over the years. This volume is part of the Collected Materials on Stories Beyond the Confucian Canon. The materials included in this book are divided into four sections based on their content:
(1) Source Section: This section contains biographies of the original prototypes of the novel characters and materials borrowed by the author from earlier works to shape the characters. To save space, only representative biographies of each character are selected. For biographical materials of figures from the Ming and Qing dynasties, readers can refer to the provided by the Comprehensive Index to Eighty-Nine Ming Dynasty Biographies compiled by the Bibliographical Research Office.
(2) Author Section: This section collects materials on the author's life, thoughts, and writings. Post-1949 discoveries of Wu Jingzi's poems and prose have been compiled into Supplementary Works of Wenmu Shanfang and appended to this volume.
(3) Version Section: This section gathers reviews of the novel published after its release by various scholars. The time limit for the materials included in this book is generally the May Fourth Movement. A few entries, however, go beyond this limit due to special needs. For each entry, the original text is as closely checked as possible, with the author, volume number, and source edition noted. For works cited multiple times from the same source, the edition is noted only under the first citation.
In this book, explanatory notes are marked with round brackets (()) and (<>), while corrective notes are marked with square brackets ([]). All textual notes in the main body are from the original works, while the editors' notes are placed under each entry in the "Editor's Note" section.
