New Magazine Design focuses on how designers around the world are striving today. One consistent theme is the emphasis on "handcrafted" techniques. Designers are moving away from high technology, returning to the simpler web and text blocks of the pre-Apple era; illustrations are meticulously crafted like embroidery, collages, and handwritten fonts are no longer just secondary illustrations but are now used in core content, and graffiti-style calligraphy and markings are employed to loosen or tighten line spacing. At first glance, these hand-drawn designs seem to align with the early advocacy of "ignoring content" by magazine art director David Carson, but in fact, these marks and graffiti are more about emphasizing content through the ironic use of technology.
