Hairpin-Adorned Court Ladies Painting is one of the representative works of the renowned Tang Dynasty painter Zhou Fang. The painting depicts a scene of five court noblewomen playing in a courtyard. A distinctive feature of Tang Dynasty court ladies' attire was the exposure of their chests and shoulders. Zhou Fang, in this painting, employed the technique of transparent silk robes, half-covered and half-revealed, to portray the full chests and rounded arms of the court ladies. This was unprecedented in painting techniques and unique in artistic effect. The court ladies depicted by Zhou Fang have plump and round faces. This "rich and full" style of "silk-clad figures" became the typical image of Tang Dynasty court ladies created by Zhou Fang. This creation by Zhou Fang made an indelible contribution to the history of Chinese painting. His superb painting techniques make the figures in the painting lifelike, forming a unique artistic style. It is a valuable Chinese classical painting masterpiece worth collecting and appreciating for its painting techniques. Zhou Fang, styled Jingxuan and Zhonglang, was a native of Chang'an during the mid-Tang Dynasty and served as the Magistrate of Xuancheng. He excelled in painting silk-clad court ladies, was also skilled in portraiture, and could paint horses, birds, beasts, and plants. Song Dynasty artist Mi Fu ranked him alongside Gu Kaizhi, Lu Tanwei, and Wu Daozi as one of the four great masters of figure painting in the Painting History. Hairpin-Adorned Court Ladies Painting features five court ladies, one maid, two dogs, and one crane. The noblewomen in the painting wear thin, translucent silk robes, with patterned long skirts underneath. They are plump, dignified, and exude elegance and nobility. The painter accurately and perfectly portrays the modeling, expressions, and movements of the figures. The brushwork for the clothing is round and full, and the depiction of the attire is meticulous and detailed, fully utilizing lines and colors to convey the texture and rich, splendid patterns of the clothing. The figures in this painting are depicted with precision, delicacy, and lifelike vitality, with exquisite line work and rich, luxurious colors.
