The book also employs poetic and rhyming forms, accompanied by illustrations and diagrams, making the content vivid and easy to understand, facilitating memorization. The entire book provides comprehensive and thorough discussions on prescriptions and treatments, extensively citing references and occasionally presenting new insights, with a particular emphasis on treatment principles and methods. The book has the following features: tracing the origins, emphasizing fetal education; classifying prescriptions by syndrome with extensive discussions; diverse treatment methods with a focus on external treatments; extensive references with illustrations and diagrams.
Supplement to Pediatric Syndromes was written by Zhang Chang (1563—?), styled Jiahong, and styled Haicheng, a native of Daliang (now Kaifeng, Henan), a physician during the Ming Dynasty. His family was engaged in the medical profession. Supplement to Pediatric Syndromes is a single volume written in the form of "question and answer," providing detailed explanations on the main symptoms, etiology, treatment methods, and prescriptions for common pediatric conditions such as fetal cold and fetal heat, totaling 15 types. The book includes 5 categories of pediatric diseases, such as liver and gallbladder syndromes in spring, to illustrate the essentials of pediatric zang-fu organ and meridian syndrome differentiation. At the beginning of the book are diagrams and songs on observing complexion, examining finger prints, and pulse-taking methods, emphasizing the key points of pediatric diagnosis. At the end of the book are included "Songs of Medicinal Herbs for Pediatric Conditions" and "Effective External Treatment Methods for Pediatric Conditions," highlighting the unique aspects of pediatric treatment and medication. The entire book delves deeply into the etiology of diseases, with meticulous discussions on theory, methods, prescriptions, and medications, particularly showing original insights in treatment methods and medication, providing valuable references for future practitioners.
